Mary Jo Turner

November 13, 1941 — June 15, 2023

SHELBY: Mary Jo (Davis) Turner, 81, passed away Thursday, June 15, with her favorite girls by her side. Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin Thomas and Viola Pitchford Davis. In addition to her parents, Mary Jo is preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Turner, Jr.; son Jerry Dwayne Turner; and sister, Burnette Blanton.
Mary Jo is survived by her daughters, Amelia Turner Loomis (Bryan) and Lynn Turner Maloney and husband John. Also left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Dot Reynolds and husband Malcolm and Faye Honeycutt and husband Jason; brother, Tom Davis (Becky); son-in-law, John Hamrick; grandchildren, Dwayne Turner II and wife Amanda, Benjamin Cody Turner, Cameron Turner, and Hannah Hamrick; 5 great-grandchildren; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews along with many dear friends. Mary Jo graduated with her nursing degree from Cleveland Community College and later attended Gardner-Webb University Nursing School. She worked at Cleveland Regional (now known as Atrium Health Cleveland) in Labor and Delivery and Fourth floor. When Cleveland Pines opened she took her love of caring for patients to skilled nursing care until she retired with over 30+ years of nursing. Mary Jo loved attending church growing up in Polkville Baptist as a youth, attending Zoar Baptist in her adult life and then helped Christopher Road Baptist Church grow as a charter member. She found her loving church home with Calvary Baptist Church in Shelby. She loved gardening and flowers, but most importantly, she loved praying for people and sharing the love of Jesus. No matter how bad she felt you could always hear her praying without ceasing for people. Mary Jo served two terms as a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Shelby Chapter #110 and is a current member of Fallston Chapter #282. We know that we couldn’t have you forever but we’re happy knowing that the angels have finally got you back. Thank you for being a true Christian and leading by example always putting others before yourself. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Sunday, June 18, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Rob Rash officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, in the church. Burial will follow in Polkville Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Empty Tummy Fund.
