SHELBY: Avis Cartee Clary, 94, died Sunday, January 8, 2023 at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lillie Chapman Cartee. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church, where she loved her church family. Avis worked as a bookkeeper for many years and enjoyed going to the mountains. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Clary; son, David G. Clary; and brother, Charles Cartee. She is survived by her daughter, Leanne Clary and Leonard Smith of Shelby; grandchildren, Stephanie Ashe and husband Tyler and Wesley Clary and wife Ashley; great-grandchildren, Garrison Ashe, Preston Ashe, Abby Clary, Macey Clary, and Lily Clary; step-great-granddaughter, Hailey White; daughter-in-law, Patti Clary of Camden, SC; and her beloved cats, Sweetie and Sweetheart. Funeral services will be held 11:00am, Friday, January 13, 2023 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jon Jones officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Clay-Barnette Funeral Home & Aquamation Center.
