VISITATION: The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 until 3:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
PERSONAL HISTORY: Born in Cleveland County to the late John Franklin and Nannie Penson Poteat, he was a retired manager in the food industry, attended Zion Baptist Church and served in the Army.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Cabaniss Poteat and a brother, John Poteat.
SURVIVORS: Two sons, Dennis and Billy Stewart of Minnesota; two daughters, Debbie and Diane Stewart of Minnesota; two stepsons, Walter Smithers and wife, Brenda of Vass, and Ray Smithers and wife, Cynthia of Harrisburg; two stepdaughters, Barbara Deal and husband, Wayne and Faye Gantt and husband, Eddie, all of Shelby; five sisters, Nancy Alderman and husband, Al of Morganton, Joyce Carter and husband, William of Kernersville, Kay Carter and husband, Thomas of Bostic, Judy Simmons and husband, James of Anderson, SC and Elizabeth Haskin of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Dean Poteat and wife, Margaret of Hendersonville and Joel Poteat and wife, Bonnie of Kings Mountain; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
