Bobby Guffey

SHELBY: Bobby B. Guffey, 87, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2023 at his home. Bobby was born in Shelby, NC on February 29, 1936 to Raleigh and Pearl M. Guffey. After graduating from Shelby High School in 1954, he served in the US Army for 2 years receiving training in Cryptography. He worked in the Pentagon in Washington, DC and later in Japan. After being honorably discharged in 1956, he came back to Shelby and attended Howard Business College and started working at First National Bank, where he worked for approximately 30 years. He then went to work with his good friend L.B Izzi, as Personnel Director of Plastic Oddities Inc. Over the years, Bobby was the treasurer of many community and civic organizations which included, Lafayette Street UMC, American Cancer Society, Shelby Civitan Club, Cleveland County Heart Association, and many others.

Shortly after graduating high, Bobby married Freida Louise Hamrick and they were married for 67 years until Freida’s passing in 2021. In addition to his wife and parents, Bobby is preceded in death by his wonderful sister, Pauline G. Murphy, and brother-in law Holman “Pat” Murphy of Shelby. Bobby is survived by sons, Russell Guffey and wife Sheila of Spartanburg, SC and Douglas Guffey and wife Dana of Shelby; grandchildren, Adam R. Guffey (Nicole Cali), Zane Guffey (Kylie Bishop), and Matthew Guffey; great- grandchildren, Tai Guffey, Emily Guffey, William R. Guffey, Logan Guffey, Amelia Guffey, and Bodhi Axel Guffey; niece, Patti Reinheimer (Bob); special cousins, Tim Ware and wife Wanda and Anne Ware; and sister in-law, Meredith Pruett.
