Brent Mcswain

SHELBY: Brent Jones McSwain, 63, passed away peacefully, April 10, 2023, with his closest family by his side. He was the son of the late J.L. and Lib McSwain. Brent was a graduate of Crest High School, UNC Charlotte, Converse College, and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He retired from NC Public Schools after serving as a counselor and administrator. He was married to Janet McSwain for 38 years and they have two daughters, Lauren Mattox and husband Jonathan of Charlotte and Ashlan Drake and husband Josh of Hendersonville; brothers, Eddie McSwain and wife Jackie of Charleston, SC and Garry McSwain and wife Freda of Shelby. He also treasured his title of “Big Mac” to his grandson Samuel Mattox. He was an athlete throughout his life, playing basketball in his younger years, and was an avid golfer and long-term member of the River Bend Golf Club. What he enjoyed most was spending time with his close family, walking in the woods and making people laugh. In recent years he developed an interest in plants native to NC. He was well versed in native plants on his wooded property and was preparing a pollinator garden. His family will miss his sense of humor tremendously and will remember him as a very generous person. His final act of kindness was demonstrated by being an organ donor. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. The family will receive friends following the service, in the Family Life Center.
