SHELBY: Mr. Dennis Edwin Porter, 58, of 5100 Ridge Street, died Friday, April 21, 2006 at home.
FUNERAL: Thursday, April 27, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Landmark Baptist Church; the body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
BURIAL: Cleveland Memorial Park with Military Honors
VISITATION: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home.
PERSONAL HISTORY: Born in Cleveland County to the late Eugene Porter and Annie Fitch Porter of Cherryville, Dennis graduated from Cherryville High School, Class of 1965. He later received two Bachelor of Arts Degrees from Cleveland Technical College in 1974. He was a Vietnam War Veteran who served in the US Army and was a faithful member of Landmark Baptist Church of Shelby. Dennis retired from (Hoechst-Celanese) Koch in 2005 after 37 years of employment. He was a devoted husband, father of 3 and grandfather of 4.
He was an avid collector of Ford Mustangs. Dennis proudly owned a red 1964 1/2 coupe, a white 1984 anniversary convertible, a red 2003 Mach I, and his last Mustang was a yellow 2006 convertible.
Dennis was a giving person who came to the aid of many and was very much loved and respected by all those who knew him. His quiet manner and kind heart will be missed.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: In addition to his father, Eugene Porter, he was also preceded in death by his beloved son Dennis “Eddie” Edwin Porter II.
SURVIVORS: Mother, Annie Fitch Porter of Cherryville; wife of 31 years, Wanda Anita Suggs Porter of the home; two daughters, Salli-Denise Smith and her husband Jim Smith of Irmo, SC; Jaime Shareen Porter Earle and her husband Rusty Earle of Gastonia; four grandchildren, Brittany, Mary Elizabeth and Jacob Smith and Ryder Edwin-Marion Earle; a brother, Michael Porter and his wife Louise of Shelby; four sisters, Barbara Troutman and her husband Freddy, Dorothy Costner, Becky Bolin and her husband Ronnie, all of Shelby, and Mary Sanders and her husband Al of Boiling Springs; mother and father-in-law Bill and Cornelia Suggs of Kings Mountain; two brothers-in-law, Dale Suggs and his wife Jane and Jerry Suggs and his wife Julia; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
