Shelby- Mr. Donald Ray Digh, 70, formerly of Shelby, died Aug. 17, 2007 at Alexandria Place Nursing Center in Gastonia. He was a native of Rutherford County, son to the late D.W. and Ira Queen Digh. He retired as a Communications Dispatcher after over twenty years of service with the City of Shelby. Ray was also very involved with his community. He was a member of the Shelby Optimist Club, volunteered with the Shelby Chapter of the Red Cross, and umpired at many softball games. He was also a carrier with the Shelby Star. Ray initiated a program to help the hearing impaired and received two awards by the Governor of NC for his service. Ray was a member of Westview Baptist Church.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Donald Ray Digh, Jr.; his step-mother, Alma Elium; a brother, William Arnold Digh; a sister, Evelyn Digh Dry; a nephew, Roy Alexander; and his step-mother-in-law, Rosie Gravely.
SURVIVORS: He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Linda Gravely Digh of Shelby; his former wife, Marjorie Patterson Digh of Elberton, GA; two daughters, Ronda Digh of Elberton, GA, and Carol D. Grogan of Myrtle Beach, SC; a step-son, Donald Shelton of Shelby; a step-daughter, Drema Piercy and her husband Pink of Cherryville; a sister, June Vaughan and her husband Grady of Kalamazoo, MI; grandchildren, David William Digh, Jennifer Elaine Digh, Christopher Allen Brown, Sgt. Jonathan Andrew Brown, Nathaniel Eric Brown, Megan Marie Grogan, and Ty Lawrence Grogan; six step-grandchildren, Lyndsie S. Jarvis, Joshua, Jordan, Christopher, Donald and Devon Shelton; and a step-great-granddaughter, Mekalia Jarvis.
VISITATION: The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home of
Drema Piercy, 1216 Old Post Road, Cherryville.
FUNERAL: 11:00 am Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Westview Baptist Church.
LIE-IN-STATE: The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
BURIAL: Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
