BOILING SPRINGS- Mr. Elwin “Papa” Crawford Stilwell, 62, of 133 Keen Drive, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center. A native of Rowan County, he is the son of Harley Crawford Stilwell of Hickory and the late Lucy Culp Stilwell. Elwin was a teller, youth leader, and an active member of Liberty Baptist Church. He owned and operated Victorian Rose Studio for over 20 years where he had the talent and ability to touch so many people's lives. His family, including his children and grandchildren, was his greatest joy in life. He loved listening to gospel music and enjoyed sailing his boat. Elwin served in the Army during Vietnam.
PRECEDED: In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Grace Kates Stilwell and step-son Ryan Washburn.
SURVIVORS: He is survived by his wife, Denise Horne Stilwell of the home; a son, Brian Stilwell and wife Beth of Shelby; daughter, Tracy Stilwell of Shelby; three sisters, Hazel Stilwell Fulbright and husband Steve of Hickory, Judy Stilwell Gilcrease and husband Roy of Texas, and Joyce Stilwell Nalley and husband Lee of Hickory; a step-son, Nick Washburn of Shelby; and two step-daughters, Natasha and Kaitlyn Washburn both of Shelby; two step-brothers, Wayne Paul Kates and wife Cindy of Hickory, and Lynn W. Kates of New Jersey; a step-sister, Sue Kates of New Jersey; two grandchildren, Noah Gabriel Stilwell and Jude Harper Stilwell, both of Shelby, mother-in-law- Margie Horne of Shelby; special friend and associate, Chip Nuhrah; and beloved dog, Truffles.
VISITATION: The family will receive friends on Friday, May 22, 2009 from 6-8:30 p.m., at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home as well as at the home of his son Brian Stilwell, 803 Poplar Springs Church Rd.
SERVICE: The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at 11 a.m., at Bethel Baptist Church. He will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
INTERMENT: Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Catawba Memorial Park with military honors.
CLERGY: Drs. Tim Sims and J.M. Ezell and Revs. Owen Duncan and Dwayne Carson will be officiating.
