Ernest Childs

March 18, 1929 — August 1, 2024

SHELBY: Dr. Ernest Childs went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 3:20 a.m.

Ernest Childs was born on March 18, 1929, and was raised in Mohawk, NY.

He was the oldest of eight children. Pearl Dunn, his younger sister, is the only sibling still living and is currently living with her daughter Jill in NY.

He had 18 nieces and nephews. Three of his nephews are deceased.

Ernest Childs was a small-town boy from a poor family, born in the Depression, who went on to earn multiple degrees, become a published author, a beloved professor, and part of the founding of a Bible college.

Dr. Childs was a man of great conviction and a great sense of humor. According to the family, the Childs are known for their ability to tell a story, and Dr. Childs was the best.

Dr. Ernest Childs was saved at the age of 29. Soon after his conversion, he went to work for his Lord, preaching and teaching the Word in young people's meetings, rescue missions, and anywhere else he could get an audience. After pursuing formal training, he spent the last 53 years in the ministry as a pastor, church planter, conference speaker, and professor of Bible and Systematic Theology at Ambassador Baptist College for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 Years, Mrs. Anita Childs, who he lovingly referred to as ‘Tiger.’

Dr. Childs moved to Covington, Georgia, in 2019 to spend the remaining years with his family, Billy and Christy Ingram, and to invest in his three grandchildren, Priscilla, Wil, and Gretchen. He served faithfully as the resident counselor for the Canaan Baptist Church family. He often said his greatest priority was encouraging his pastor and praying daily for him and his family.

Dr. Child's preaching had a distinct theme, the "Not I but Christ life," or the victorious Christian life, not as something unique for a select few but the life that God intended for all of His children and made possible by the work of Christ.

You only had to spend a little time around Dr. Childs before you noticed a recurring theme in his preaching, teaching, counseling, and everyday conversations: the message of surrender. Surrender was the key that unlocked the benefits of our new birth and the criterion for possessing the inheritance Christ gave us. "Open hands," he would say, is the only way to live the Christian life.

A memorial service took place at Canaan Baptist Church on Saturday, August 3. The service can be watched on the Canaan Baptist Church YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3YuisWs

A second memorial service will also be held on Friday, August 23, at 3 p.m. at Ambassador Baptist College, Lattimore, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, Dr. Childs has requested that donations be made to the Canaan Baptist Music Trust fund. He helped establish this organization to support the development of musicians who master the process and serve the Lord in the church.
