Faye Porter Suggs Faulk, 84, passed away on January 11, 2024. She had been living at Forest Heights Senior Living Center in Winston-Salem, NC, near her daughter, Betty Hastings. Faye was born on June 6, 1939, in Loris, SC. It became the place she grew up, returned to often, and requested to be buried. She was the daughter of the late Mary Frances Elliott Porter and the late Lacy Layton Porter, a farming family. In addition to her parents, her younger brother, Lloyd Larue Porter, and her older brother Eugene Edwards Porter, preceded her in death.
Faye was also preceded in death by her husbands. At 22, she married the late Curtis James Suggs, Jr., a prominent civic leader and automobile dealer in Loris, SC. She became a widow at a young age, and along with her two young children, she moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC, and bought a small business. It was there that she met her second husband, the late Ben Elbe, a Baptist pastor and youth music leader. The family moved to Loris and Britain’s Neck, SC, then to St. Louis, MO.
After moving back to Conway, SC, and having her third child, Faye moved to Charlotte, NC for a fresh start on her own. She tried her hand at several professions to support her three young daughters. While selling insurance, she met the late Harold David Faulk, a former life insurance salesman. They made their home in Matthews NC, and were married for 46 years, until his death in 2021.
In 1978, Faye returned to college, and completed a teaching degree from the University of NC at Charlotte in 1982. She became a math teacher and later a principal. She found the job very satisfying, and continued to work until she was 70. Faye was a puzzle fan, music and game show lover, and math wiz. She also loved to work with her hands. She made clothes for herself and for her daughters. She was a crochet and knit enthusiast, and tried macrame and needle point.
Survivors include: her older sister, Mildred Streeper of Visalia, CA; and her three daughters and sons-in-law, Lynne Faulk (and Chris Banks), of Finchingfield in England, Betty (and Michael) Hastings of Winston-Salem, NC, and Jeanie (and Tony) Pressley of Linwood, NC. She had four grandchildren: Lynne’s son, Peyton Levin (and his partner, Carly Stilson), of Seattle, WA; Betty’s children, Kirby Hastings and Cassandra Hastings of Winston-Salem; and Jeanie’s son, Travis (and Jessica) Clark of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held in the mausoleum chapel, at Twin City Memorial Gardens in Loris, SC, on February 17 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Faye’s name to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home (Forsyth County) at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or at
