SHELBY- Mrs. Gladys H. Bridges of Shelby passed away Saturday, February 23, 2008. She had been living in Candler, NC for the past four and one-half years and was in Aston Park Health Care Center in Asheville, NC for two years. She would have been 102 on March 4. Mrs. Bridges was a faithful member of Dover Baptist Church since 1927, and during those years, was active in Sunday school, WMU and Discipleship Training.
She started teaching school in 1924 at Broad River Academy after earning an “A” certificate the summer after graduating from High School. While teaching at Shanghai and Dover Schools, she attended Appalachian State Teacher’s College during the summers and in 1959 she graduated Cum Laude, with a BS degree. She taught school in Cleveland County and the Shelby City System for 46 years. She was a member of the Shelby Woman’s Club, Cleveland County Retired Teachers’ Organization, Graham School retired teachers’ group, and a member of North Carolina Association of Educators. After retirement, Mrs. Bridges continued serving at Dover Baptist Church and did volunteer work at White Oak Manor.
Her husband, Clyde Bridges, preceded her in death.
Survivors are a goddaughter, Joy Champion Ramsey and her husband, Bob, from Candler, NC, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews and many cousins.
VISITATION: The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
FUNERAL: The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Dover Baptist Church, Polkville Road.
BURIAL: Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
