SHELBY- J.L. “Jake” McSwain, a true gentleman, 88, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2016, at Peak Resources of Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Richard Lee and Maude Turner McSwain. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church where he served on many committees, sang in the choir, served as a Deacon, and taught Sunday School, he was a true gentleman to everyone he met. He was a United States Navy Veteran, serving in the Pacific during World War II. He was an avid golfer and loved being a fruit farmer growing apples and peaches. He was a loving and selfless husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law.
PRECEDED: in addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Jones McSwain; three brothers, Bill, Jim, and Kess McSwain two sisters, Ada Wright, and Helen Dellinger.
SURVIVED: He is survived by three sons, Eddie McSwain, and wife Jackie of Charleston, Garry McSwain and wife Freda, Brent McSwain and wife Janet all of Shelby; one sister, Nancy Harmon of Morganton; six grandchildren, Dawn Durante and husband Tom, David McSwain, Allyson Surratt and husband John, Josh McSwain and wife Wendy, Lauren Mattox and husband Jonathan, and Ashlan McSwain; eight great-grandchildren, Elly, Joe, and Colette Durante, Hannah McSwain, Jake, Bethany McSwain, Cruz and Cara Surratt.
SERVICES: A funeral service will be held 1PM Wednesday at Poplar Spring Baptist Church.
VISITATION: The family will receive friends after the funeral service in the Family Life Center.
CLERGY: Rev. Andy Oliver will officiate
INTERMENT: Entombment will be at Cleveland Memorial Park after the visitation on Wednesday.
