Jacqueline Hughes

SHELBY-Jackie, as she was known to her many friends, went to Heaven to be with her Lord Jesus Christ, February 19, 2014 at Carrington Place in Matthews, where she had been a resident for 11 months. A native of Cleveland County, Mrs. Hughes graduated from Shelby High School and Gardner-Webb College. She was a very active participant in numerous school clubs and activities. She worked briefly at Oak Ridge Tennessee as a member of the clerical staff of the top secret "Manhattan Project" to develop the first atomic bomb during World War II. She attended the University of North Carolina before marrying Dan R. Hughes, a decorated WWII Combat Medic. Jackie was a devout Christian who set an example for her family and friends to follow. She enjoyed singing in the Choir at First Baptist Church in Shelby for many years. She often played the piano for opening assembly for her Sunday School. She and her husband Dan were camp counselors at First Baptist’s annual week long youth camp for several years. She enjoyed reading books, magazines and collecting cookbooks. She loved making mealtimes special for her family. She was deeply devoted to her family and friends and would readily go out of her way to help any family member or friend. Jackie and Dan always enjoyed attending the grandchildren’s sports event and other activities. Jackie was an exceptional mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was appreciated and loved by all who knew her.

PRECEDED: Jackie was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dan R. Hughes, her father and mother, Oren and Bertha Huskey, and her grandson Brian Ashley Kamp.

SURVIVED: Jackie is survived by her son, Michael Hughes and wife Nancy of Shelby; her daughter, Madeline Hughes Kamp of Indian Trail; four grandsons, Chris Hughes and wife Angie of Mt. Holly, Steven Hughes and wife Elaine of Forest City, Allen Kamp and wife Amy of Waxhaw, and Ryan Kamp of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Michaela Hughes, Gavin Hughes, Ella Hughes, Lane Hughes, and Ariella Kamp; sister Shirley Roberts and husband Rev. Joe Roberts of Greenville, SC; sister-in-law Doris McCurry of Shelby; and many nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Saturday, 4PM, at First Baptist Church Webb Chapel

VISITATION: The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at Webb Chapel
