Joe H. Anthony

BOILING SPRINGS – Mr. Joe Herbert Anthony, 82, of 1810 Gaffney Road, died Sat., Nov. 17, 2012 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Austin Odell and Lucille Blanton Anthony. Mr. Anthony was owner-operator of Anthony’s Jewelry Store in Boiling Springs. He spent two years in the Army, serving as a part of the peacekeeping force in Germany. He later joined his dad and brother Donald in operating Anthony’s Jewelry and Sporting Goods, and has continued the operation of the store until the present. Joe was a 1949 graduate of Boiling Springs High School where he was a star baseball pitcher. He attended Gardner-Webb Junior College 1949-1951, where he was again a star baseball pitcher under Coaches Wayne Bradburn and Norman Harris. He pitched for the America Legion Junior Baseball Team and was a member of the National Championship Team of 1945. Joe was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. At the age of 18 he was ordained as a deacon, served as Sunday School Superintendent and Training Union Director, among other positions. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and great-grandfather. He was known as a great fisherman, hunter, as well as a teller of tales. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

PRECEDED: In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Lou Dean Anthony; a brother and his wife, Donald and Kay McSwain Anthony of Boiling Springs; and a sister, Brenda Anthony Randolph of Gaffney.

SURVIVED: He is survived by his two sons, Stanley Alexander Anthony and wife Debbie, and Mark Wayne Anthony, all of Shelby; daughter, Candace Anthony Harris and husband Larry of Mooresboro; three sisters, Nancy Anthony Poston of Boiling Springs, Dorothy “Dot” Anthony Penson, and Linda Anthony Raynor and husband Randy, all of Shelby; seven grandchildren, Josh Anthony of Shelby, Jennifer Pruett and husband Ryan of Cherryville, Lakisha Anthony Estes and husband Kevin of Gaffney, Melissa Dellinger of Shelby, Lana Harris Houck and husband Bryan of Palmerton, PA, Lara Harris Deatrick and husband Daniel of Canton, MO, and Cpl. Larry E. Harris Jr. and wife Taylor of Twentynine Palms, CA.; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn and Cara Anthony of Shelby, Paxton, Lily, and Hadonn Pruett of Cherryville, Nicholas, Madison, and Michael Estes of Gaffney, Bryson and Brianna Houck of Palmerton, PA, and Emily Grace Deatrick of Canton, MO.; aunt, Ella Blanton Wells of Aiken, SC; and numerous nieces, nephew, and friends.

SERVICES: Monday, 3pm, at Flint Hill Baptist Church

VISITATION: The family will receive friends, Monday, 1:30-3pm, at the church, and other times at his home.

BURIAL: Tuesday, 11am, at Cleveland Memorial Park with military honors.
