SHELBY- Mr. J. Warren “Bill” Gamble, Sr., 92, of 105 Springdale St., Shelby, died Sunday, November 5, 2006 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Henry Wilson Gamble and Cynthia Ware Gamble. He owned and operated Gamble’s Amoco and Gamble’s Esso for over 50 years. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir for over 25 years, served as Deacon, Chairman of the Deacons, and as an officer of the church in many different capacities. He served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre on the U.S.S. Draco and was a member and officer of the V.F.W., D.A.V. and the American Legion.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Aileen Jones Gamble; and 7 brothers and sisters.
SURVIVORS: He is survived by a son, J.W. “Bill” Gamble, Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Lattimore; a daughter, Susan Gamble Ellis and husband, David, of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Justin Gamble and Natalie Gamble, both of Lattimore, and Zach Ellis and Andy Ellis, both of Spartanburg.
VISITATION: The family will receive friends on Monday, November 6, 2006 from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home.
FUNERAL: 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at Second Baptist Church.
LIE-IN-STATE: The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
BURIAL: Interment with Navy Honors will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
