Karen Milobar-Richey Gray

June 12, 1940 — September 12, 2017

KINGS MOUNTAIN: Karen Elizabeth Milobar-Richey-Gray, 77, died Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at Carolinas Healthcare System-Shelby.

She was born in Gary, Indiana to the late Daniel and Elma Erickson Milobar. Her father was a devoted Mason and her mother worked as a Librarian for many years. She had a younger brother named Daniel Milobar. She graduated from Merriville High School in Merriville, Indiana. She later met Paul Allen Richey and they married September 6, 1958 at a Presbyterian Church in Merriville, Indiana. Paul was in the Air Force and stationed at SAC Headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska where the two moved and lived on Offutt Air Force Base. They moved to South Carolina in 1962 where they remained.

She worked many years for the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy where she taught water rescue and safety to all Law Enforcement Officers in South Carolina. She also worked part-time for the American Red Cross teaching water safety and swimming including the handicapped and infants.

She loved to dive and was an active recreational diver diving in places such as Walkers Cay in the Abaco Islands, Cozumel, Cancun, Caymen Islands, Roatan, Honduras and Bonaire just to name a few favorites. She loved to dive with sharks, dolphins, moray eels and many other ocean habitants. She also enjoyed teaching Sunday School at Christus Victor Lutheran Church.

Upon retiring, she moved to Kings Mountain, North Carolina where she resided until her demise. She is survived by her son, Patrick Allen Richey and her daughter Julie Lynn Richey-Yeager-Sumner and her three children (granddaughters) Michelle Ann Yeager-Martin, Paula Marie Yeager and Windy Lea Yeager-Speers.
