Shelby- Mr. Larry Revels, 71, of 712 Maynard Street died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006 at home. He retired from the United States Air Force and served in TX, N.C., GA, Panama Canal Zone, Iceland, Turkey, OK, with his last assignment being at the Air National Guard in Jackson, MS.
He also retired from Cleveland County where he served the citizens of Cleveland County as their VA Service Officer 1974-1977; Assistant Emergency Services Director 1977-1978; Emergency Services Director and Personnel Director 1978-1984; Personnel Director/Purchasing 1984-1986; and Purchasing Agent 1986-1996.
He was a member of Westview Baptist Church where he served on the Building Grounds Committee and the Kitchen Committee and was a member of the Come and See Sunday School Class which was a very special part of his life. He was also a member of the VFW, Shelby Masonic Lodge No. 744, Masonic Scottish Rite of Guthrie, OK; Oasis Temple Shriners of Charlotte, and the North Carolina Retired Government Employees Association.
He was preceded in death by his father, P.F. Revels, and a brother, Rudy Revels.
He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth S. Revels of Shelby; his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Gold Revels; three sons, Mike Revels and wife Kate of Atlanta, GA, Randy Revels and wife Shelby of Shelby, and Don Revels and wife Stacey of Lincolnton, N.C.; two granddaughters, Aurora Revels and Tiffany Poston and a grandson, Cam Revels; a brother, Ollis Revels and wife Betty of Monroe; two sisters, Ramona R. Deal and husband Warren of Waco, and Valeria R. Webber and husband Jimmy of Myrtle Beach S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
His grandchildren were very special to him. He enjoyed the outdoors-especially the yard and enjoyed all sports especially playing golf with his three sons. He had many friends and always enjoyed being with them. He loved his home and his family and was always busy with some home improvement project or doing something for his family.
He has cared for his Mother for many years and supported his wife in her care of her parents. He always wanted to be sure his Mother would continue to have the best of care when he could no longer do it himself. He was always preparing for the future as well as taking care of family and friends. In life as well as illness, he was a real independent fighter.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home 6:00 – 8:00 tonight (Friday, October 20) and at other times at the home.
Funeral: 2:00 pm Saturday (Oct. 21) at Westview Baptist Church, 500 Melody Lane, Shelby. The casket will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Officiating: Revs. Steve Ellis and Jim Brackett.
Burial will follow in Sunset cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Air Force and Masonic Rites.
