SHELBY- Mr. Max Augustus Crawford, 73, of 100-3 Kenwall Village Dr., died Saturday, July 19, 2008. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Vert Lionel Crawford and Blanch Weast Crawford. He was formerly employed as supervisor with J.P. Stevens and was a U.S. Army Veteran, with service in Korea. He enjoyed bowling and golfing, and he coached Little League baseball in the 1960’s. He also enjoyed racing dirt track race cars at both the Shelby Fairgrounds Speedway and the Harris Speedway during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Mr. Crawford was a member of the AMVETS, DAV, American Legion and the VFW.
PRECEDED IN DEATH: In addition to his parents, his son, Bobby Max Crawford, brother, Claude Crawford and sister, Joann Hawkins, preceded him in death.
SURVIVORS: He is survived by two daughters, Freida Ware and husband, Rev. John Ware and Carla Cody and husband, Ricky, all of Shelby; a sister, Frances Phillips of Kings Mountain; three grandchildren, Melia Stover and husband, Matt, Carly Cody and Ric Cody, all of Shelby; two great- grandchildren, Will and Josh Stover, both of Shelby; former wife, Fern Bell Crawford of Shelby and companion, Dot Willis Cox of Shelby.
VISITATION: The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2008 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
FUNERAL: The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel.
BURIAL: Burial with military honors will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
