Tommy Bridges

SHELBY: Tommy Ray Bridges, a lifelong resident of Cleveland County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Cleveland County on March 26, 1943, he was the son of the late Clyde Bridges and Minnie Ledford Bridges.
A man of service and dedication, Tommy honorably served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he devoted himself to the community as a firefighter with the Shelby Fire Department. Later in life, he channeled his passion for mechanics into establishing and operating Bridges Automotive, where he specialized in Volkswagen repairs and racecar engines. In his later years, Tommy worked with UPS, maintaining their equipment with the same diligence and care he applied to all his endeavors.
Tommy's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid drag racing enthusiast, loved collecting firearms, and took immense joy in watching NASCAR races. A dedicated fan of the Atlanta Braves, Tommy could often be found cheering them on from the comfort of his home.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Minnie Bridges, and his brothers, Jim and Bob Bridges. Tommy is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Debbie Hoyle Bridges, who cherished him deeply. He leaves behind a loving family that includes his daughters, Tammy Davidson and her husband Allan of Shelby, and Chrissy Wince and her husband Kenny of Shelby; his sons, Chad McSwain and his wife Jennifer of Kings Mountain, and Ryan Brown and his wife Abby of Michigan. He is also survived by his sisters, Jeanette Bivens of Lawndale and Peggy Russ of Shelby, along with eight beloved grandchildren: Bethany Burrows and her husband Austin, Rachel Wince, Taylor McSwain, Carson Wince, Kayla McSwain, Cade Wince, Jack Brown, and Reid Brown.
Private family services will be held at a later date to honor and remember the life of Tommy Ray Bridges. As we reflect on his legacy, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by service, love, and passion.
